Bayview Park Incident and Recent Crime Have Residents Concerned

Letter to the editor-
Over the past year, several serious incidents have raised concern among members of our community.

In May of last year, a daytime jewelry store robbery occurred. Fortunately, no one was injured; however, there has been little public follow-up. In April of this year, another robbery took place, again with no meaningful updates shared.

Most recently, there was a shooting at Bayview Park, and aside from being informed that there is no immediate threat, very little additional information has been provided.

These incidents, along with smaller day-to-day issues that often go unreported, are beginning to affect how safe residents feel in our city.

Following the Bayview Park incident, there was a noticeable increase in police presence the next day. The difference was clear—there was less crowding in certain waterfront areas, fewer disturbances, and an overall improved sense of order.

This demonstrated how effective a visible police presence can be.

With that in mind, I would like to respectfully suggest several ideas that may help maintain that level of safety moving forward.

A consistent presence of officers or bike patrols at key waterfront locations—such as Bayview Park, the end of High Street near the gazebo, and the end of Madison Avenue—particularly during the summer months, could make a meaningful difference.

I understand that staffing can be a challenge, and that officers are often committed to handling incidents for extended periods. For that reason, expanding the use of camera systems and encouraging waterfront residents to register their private cameras may help supplement coverage.

The use of additional mobile or temporary cameras in key areas could also help address gaps when officers are not physically present.

I understand that Flock Safety is currently used by the city; however, any expansion of such systems should include thoughtful discussion regarding privacy considerations and potential vulnerabilities.

There may also be opportunities to pursue grant funding for this type of technology so that the financial burden does not fall directly on taxpayers.

Equally important is communication with the community. Hosting meetings with residents at nearby locations such as St. Peter’s, St. Demetrios, or First Baptist Church could help address concerns and strengthen trust.

These conversations may also encourage individuals to come forward with information that could assist ongoing investigations.

I understand that some of these concerns may fall within the scope of the City’s Citizen Public Safety Advisory Board; however, I was unable to find any upcoming meeting dates listed on the city website.

I share these thoughts with respect for the work being done and with the hope that we can continue to improve safety and quality of life in our city.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Respectfully,

Mark Carbaja
