Perth Amboy Council Says No to Water Rate Increase

The Perth Amboy Council unanimously voted no to a water rate increase for Perth Amboy. The Perth Amboy CFP/Comptroller Jill Goldy said that the utility moratorium has resulted in some non payment of water bills and a water increase would be necessary to make up the shortfall. Governor Phil Murphy signed Executive Order No. 229, extending a moratorium preventing New Jersey residents from having their utilities disconnected for nonpayment through at least June 30, 2021. The moratorium applies to all residential gas, electric and water utilities, both public and private. It has been reported that Utilities are seeking a bail out. Some landlords and renters have been seeking rental assistance, but many have not paid their bills yet. Ideas like Mayor Caba’s administration requesting direct payments from the county utility recovery fund to cover the utility nonpayment have been mentioned, instead of increasing the costs on city residents (including those who have paid their bills.)
