Prepare for Extreme Heat. Perth Amboy Cooling Centers Open

Heat wave hits perth amboy

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning that will hit our area from Monday June 23-Wednesday June 25. Temps will reach double digits during the day and are set to break records for nighttime heat.

The weather will be dangerously hot. The hottest temps will occur Monday and Tuesday. Mondays heat is set to hit 100 by 2pm with feels like temps projected at 118. Low temps between 75-80 plus humidity will offer little relief from heat at night. Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity.

There is also a code orange air quality alert for ground level ozone and fine particles in our area from Mon-Wed. A code orange alert means that air pollution concentrations in our region will become unhealthy for sensitive groups including children, people with asthma, heart disease, lung disease and the elderly. Avoid strenuous activity or exercise outdoors.

How to Prepare

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children or pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Perth Amboy will have cooling centers open at the Jankowski Center at 1 Olive St from Monday-Friday open 8am-4pm and at the Raritan Bay YMCA Monday-Friday open from 7:30am-8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 7:30am-2pm.

If you do not have an air conditioner in your home or lack shelter, you can call 211 for assistance in locating shelter from the heat.

If you go to the waterfront and attempt to swim, realize that the current is very strong and dangerous for swimming.
